    It looks kinda gay but ansroid/google phone OS is about perfect so wondering how it stacks up to windows

    Can't say that i do, but isn't that the OS where you basically just have a screen connected to some google server farm, where your resources and files reside and such? Haven't looked into it beyond from what i've heard.

    They may be designed to be connected, but Chromebooks have local storage and can work offline.

    Yeah, I think you need a google account to get past the lock screen but everything runs locally. It's trivial to install whatever linux distro and chromebooks tend to be really good hardware at their pricepoint. I used one as my primary computer for a couple years in college. I mean it's not fantastic but for what they are, they're surprisingly good.
