colloquially, to "make it show up on the console".
The term itself is a holdover from the era of actually having printouts and no screens to speak of. A lot of how a terminal emulator works is inherited from line printers which is kind of comic and increasingly painful as the decades of building things with no intention of it ever ending up on paper go on.
It's a little more complicated than that because in POSIX land you have at least two streams that and up on the screen, so you might see like "print to stderr", but usually it means write to stdout.
