There are so many guns in circulation, as well as people with the skills to manufacture more, that it'd take a long time for any effects to be felt if at all.
Ammunition's a different story though, probably the most effective way to ban guns because guns gotta eat. Rounds aren't hard to make, but rounds that will work reliably in modern guns are a lot trickier -

If they set a date for example 20th October 2020 and said after this date all sales of firearms would be illegal, the price of firearms would rise as demand would rise even if they scaled up production.
IMO there is literally 0 chance a crazy ass school kid will be able to afford one easily in due time. Maybe it will take 29 years but that's better than infinity years. Guns will probably be way better curated and guarded, if it was handled by private citizens. No way they would sell to some weirdo wigging out with a record if it came down to private circulation of a limited stock. -
