   Most of those gladiators were slaves or aristocrats. Being a gladiator put you in a high social status. They were celebrities. It wasn't just a bloodfest where they wanted to watch anyone and everyone get killed. The people wanted a fight.
   
   Also can you imagine how fucking INSANE it would be to be an average roman citizen then see some shit like an African Elephant pop out into the arena? It'd be like a mythical beast. You'd have little to no concept of what an elephant was before that match. It must have been massively entertaining.

   
   It was called damnatio ad bestias, and while I'm too lazy to find a primary historical source talking about families being killed en masse specifically, people *were* thrown to the beasts in the arena as a 2-for-one execution/source of entertainment. When you consider how many people used to turn up to an event as mundane as a hanging, you gotta imagine that even if they weren't going to put up much of a fight it'd still be great entertainment.
