So far I've made it to my first village and raided a desert temple. No ingot or planks yet, need to keep looking.
You can get sticks from dead bushes. I think saplings have a 25% chance of spawning in a blacksmith's chest.

I added more RAM and the reset seems to have cleared up performance issues.

It's an endless desert now. I think I just found my first supply of wood:
Hopefully there are some iron golems I can release to hold off the pillagers while I steal their wood. And hopefully they have some carrots, so I can start farming rabbits and wear a rabbit skin suit.
