World-famous atheist Richard Dawkins has admitted that a world without religion and God would lead to moral decline.

Dawkins recently told The Times that he feared abolishing religion would be bad for society as it would “give people a licence to do really bad things”.

“People may feel free to do bad things because they feel God is no longer watching them,” he told The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Expanding on his point, Dawkins recalled an experiment by one of his former pupils, Melissa Bateson at the University of Newcastle, which involved the setting up of a coffee station with an honesty box used for payments.

“They help themselves to coffee and they are supposed to put money in the box and each week the honesty box takes in less than the amount of coffee taken,” he said.

However, Dawkins said when a pair of watchful eyes were drawn on the price list, the takings were significantly higher.
