Those individuals informally referred to as "coughgels" in the 2020's were granted access for formal psychiatric treatment in 2037, under the formal diagnosis of "Dissociative Personality Disorder" (DPD), in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Seventh Ed. (DSM-7).
The addition of Dissociative Personality Disorder to the DSM-7 occurred due to a political controversy regarding the segregation of children with Mental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified into special education programs, with no constellation of symptoms bearing similarity to any disorder in the DSM-6.
After factor analysis of the personality and behavioral variables of these children was conducted (Crojus, 2013), it was determined that the derogatory term "coughgel" had enough statistical backing to be formally recognized as a mental illness.
