Let's stick to the PI issue and drop the rape analogy. Fundamentally if you care about PI, yours or anyone else's it might be beneficial to have examples to point to as to what not to do. Then when something bad happens it is beneficial to everyone to have that person to point to and say: Don't be like this idiot, guys.
In fact i'd wager it's critical to the social structure of the community. Not only does it enforce a certain set of values it protects the community in the long run by protecting every individual within that community. It is the best situation that we can extract from an unfortunate instance of one person fucking up.
And really, Wariat makes for a good example because nothing of value was lost for us, and a lot of value could be extracted from this by him, if he wanted to be a part of this community that is. Now if he can't do that he's dumb, but if he can and chooses not to then he doesn't want to be a part of our community.
I don't get why i have to keep explaining these things to people. -

So you would have no problem turning in a drug dealer to the police because if you can turn them in its their fault for not hiding their operations better.
