I've noticed the opposite, the use of the word humans overtaking people to make things seem less personal and thus to take the individuality out of culture
It's cringy for you and me maybe but it's effective at swaying most "normal" people subconsciously. Using inclusive language like that makes the reader feel like a part of the in-group of the person writing the article or saying the words. Basically it's a rhetorical device used to persuade people.
