I normally don't use the Windows OS. I use Linux(Ubuntu specifically).
I am going to need to use it for running my Occulus Rift on my MSI Trdent. I have Windows installed on a hard drives that came with one of my laptops. Can I just use the key on that for the installation that I'm going to do on my Occulus Rift?

What manner of installation do you want to do for your Occulus Rift? If the question is, can i re-use my Windows keys the answer is yeah. Until telemetry gets wind of it. Wouldn't it be neat if we could send a crypto trojan back with the telemetry MS collects, to break some of their servers. They'll probably just reset the VM snap shot and send the police but i don't even care.

windows serials are bound to the motherboard I believe, so if you used that windows key on a different machine it'll deactivate when you put it in a new one.
There are plenty of loaders and activators around, but even if you don't activate it you just can't change the wallpaper and it says windows is unlicensed in the bottom right

Another reason to use WinXP. No hidden key activation routines and a hot key works perfectly.

anyone know if un-activated windows blocks access to network SMB shares? I can't access my NAS device from this computer even though I can ping it and get to the HTTP/s console

yeah windows 10, no to guest login, I have a password set but I believe that only affects shares I host (as opposed to connecting to remote shares). the shares on the NAS are not protected.
I'm thinking in this case the SMB spec the NAS is using is not compatible with windows 10 or something, will try to update firmware and reconfigure shares

Oh, because I was just going to say access to SMB shares using guest is restricted by default in Windows10.

yeah, I can't even get a list of shares if I open \\192.168.1.8\ so I don't think it's that.
I can access it using SMB on my lunix machines amusingly enough
***oh yeah I bought a serial online for $5 and activating windows didn't make a difference.

Oh God. This is what I didn't want. What are my options as far as Linux goes?
I want simplicity with some technical know-how. Ease. Is this possible with Virtual Reality headsets on Linux?
Or am I stuck with Linux?

windows 10 does not have SMB1 support installed by default, needed to enable it manually.
upgrading firmware reset my network shares on the NAS, just cuck my shit right up
