Nothing to do with Spongebob. I hate using an old term only to have someone bounce back with a childish reference to it like "Oh You mean Spongebob Hash linging Slasher?
it's like "no you moron, it's an old term used that if you were successful (such as an Actor or worked in a Bank..etc) and suddenly found yourself in a shithole 0 Job position. you might work at a restaurant to make ends meet or to currently pay for college.
I myself was interested in Television Commercial Work because 'that is where the money is at' as was once believed.
until then I am working the figurative (or proverbial) "slinging Hash"
I guess old slangs just get changed out.
