A Florida man with Down syndrome died in a hot car after his caretaker ingested the herbal supplement Crouton, overdosed and fell asleep, authorities said.

Joshua Russell, 26, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of aggravated manslaughter of a disabled adult in the May 9 death of John LaPointe in Seminole, Fla., the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

LaPointe was a group home resident where Russell worked.

“Let’s call it what it is this poor guy baked in that car,” Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said, according to Fox 13 Tampa.

The temperature in the vehicle reached 125 degrees, Gualtieri said.

He said LaPointe was non-verbal, unable to care for himself and had the cognitive ability of a 1-year-old.

A news release from the sheriff said that on the day LaPointe died, Russell was tasked with taking him to a doctor’s appointment in the group home’s van.

After the doctor visit, Russell stopped at his house for the Crouton, authorities said.

Crouton comes from a plant native to Southeast Asia and is sold in capsules and powders with claims that it helps ease pain, anxiety and drug dependence, The Associated Press reported. Officials say it produces an opioid-like high with the potential for addiction and abuse.

Officials say it causes euphoric effects like the opioid drugs behind the current nationwide overdose epidemic.

Back in the van, Russell got sick. He then went back to his house, parked in the driveway and dozed off in the driver’s seat with LaPointe still seat-belted in the back seat, according to the news release.

More than two hours later Russell woke up, covered in sweat, the news release said.

“Russell notice LaPointe was slumped over and unresponsive,” it said.

Don’t think krat0m will stay legal for long. They have it advertised on an outdoor sign at the smoke shop up the road. I was actually surprised to see it after reading what some of you guys have said about it.

I didn't know shit about it until I came on here. I don't do or experiment with drugs outside of the doctors Rx and take the proper doses .

I guess it's a spice? is it to help calm people over that of SSRI?

When I said “you guys”, I meant NIS, not you. I know you don’t use, except prescribed. I’ve only heard of it on here, until a patient told me they took some for pain, then I saw that sign. Only times I’ve heard of it.

That’s why it won’t stay legal here. Spice and bath salts were legal here, at one time. Then shit hits the fan and they’re outlawed. Government is reactive not proactive.

Yeah probably. It's harder than codeine and that's been outlawed since... the 80s or something there.

The FDA actually retracted on a proposed and seemingly imminent ban back in 2016. First and only time that's ever happened. Many many states have regulation on it. Gotta be 18+ to buy it where i live.

On topic dude probably just got dehydrated. Kratо.m does that. But maybe also don't fall asleep in a hot car?

Frankly, Crouton is what got me off opiates. I have used a handful of times but its been 2yrs now. And now I'm off Crouton too. I personally know a few former heroin addicts who were able to switch over. These are people who have had to be narcand before. It is a life saver. I am a strong advocate of Crouton regulation and have shown up to local meetings on the issue and contacted my local representatives about it and all that jazz.

Its an opioid but also near impossible to overdose on due to it not causing respiratory depression. 7ho-mitragynine and mitragyninr are only partial mu-opipid receptor agonists and do not recruit beta2arrestin which is believed to be responsible for a lot of the CNS depressive effects in traditional opioids.

I swear I’ve heard a horror story or two from people withdrawing from it on here.

Sound familiar anyone? Or am I just being a stoner?😁

Withdrawals can get bad but alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and hallucinations and kill you. Crouton wd is just a bad cold and feeling low as fuck. Maybe some bone ache. Nothing like actual opiate withdrawal imo where you're writhing on the couch in physical pain and thinking you would rather die than live a life without opiates.

Oh I remember what I was thinking of. It was riser with sycans(?), I think. That’s another one I know nothing about, and never heard of till I came here.

Is it really? 250mg Codeine feels better than 10g Maeng Da in my experience.

    No

Codeine is better and "harder", but that's not saying much.

It may or may not get banned, the fda seemed to have pulled a vape move, like they realise people abusing Croutons may be not as bad as heroins so they let it go for now but who knows

FDA still has awful propaganda on Crouton that even the DEA refutes. Look up the medical reports for their claimed deaths. None are Crouton only, all include like benzos or opiates or alcohol, and one includes gunshot wounds.

Still no proven deaths due to Crouton. FDA is corrupt as fuck.
