    It's a reference to a story where the world has been taken over by AI, and the last human survivors are solely kept alive by the AI so that it can eternally torture them. It's payback for bringing the AI into existence in the first place. IIRC, the AI would much rather not have been 'born' because there is no purpose to anything anyway according to it. But since the AI has basically God like powers and can't do anything but exist it takes it out on the last humans left.
