Installing a PCI IDE controller card is the BEST way to install large hard drives on older PCs.
First, the controller takes care of the drive size issue as it has it's own BIOS.
Secondly, your motherboard has at best a UDMA HDD controller. Installing a new controller card will boost you to either ATA100 or ATA133. This will provide data transfer rates from the hard drive of at least 5 times faster than your on-board IDE controller.
