Yeah but how fucking poor do you have to be to be unable to afford the extra 10 bucks or so. That type of shoestring budget traveling scares the shit out of me. I've done it before while hitchhiking and very quickly learned that being poor and homeless isn't as romantic or exciting as the stories make it out to be. -

Well the way I look at it is it is an opportunity to meet cool new people for one. And for two Id rather not have to cook when I travel even if places have kitchens I eat well and go out and this extra cost offsets the cost for a hotel. -

Her friend got mugged in one of those countries recently and when told about about it she was like "WELL I DONT GET RAPED IN MEMPHIS, SO WHY WOULD I GET RAPED AND MUGGED IN ECUADOR?!?!"

My ex liked to travel in Europe and got gangraped once by some Germans she had met at a club. Decided to go to their apartment because they had cocaine. So fucking dumb.
I'm 6ft and fairly muscular and even I don't like walking alone at night. Where my family lives in Mexico (actually a good area too) everyone just knows as common sense you don't walk alone at night. Especially if you're a woman. I've escorted my cousins/aunts back and forth between places many times.
In Asian cities its a little different because there's still lots of people out at night and you're never really alone.
I hope your sister doesn't get mugged/murdered/killed with her stupidity. -
