The way the Germans worked is that if you didn't follow orders you would be given a summary conviction and shot. It was basically standard operating procedure. Didn't even matter how high up you were or what rank you had. They had a system that if you didn't obey orders, you were executed within short order, and everyone understood that. This produced a high degree of effectiveness and uniformity and productivity.
