Reddit has decided that ICE detention centers are concentration camps

Provide opinion in meme form only (like the rest of 2019 society).
Nuanced opinions banned on site.
You've been warned. -
2019-07-25 at 11:12 PM UTCIn the sense that criminals are concentrated there, yes.
-
2019-07-25 at 11:21 PM UTCI go on Reddit daily but I never see this kind of stuff.

I've seen it in more than one thread on there, but just like an hour ago there was a thread in ALL that took the same turn (I mean, to the point that anyone questioning the claim is downvoted like crazy):

2019-07-25 at 11:37 PM UTCI mean... It's irony embedded in irony embedded in...
Fuck I don't even know anymore...
Is all politics just meme and irony these days? -

2019-07-25 at 11:53 PM UTCI found a two comment exchange that pretty succinctly sums up that page (first post: ~30 downvotes, the reply: ~20 upvotes).
Comparing our detention centers to inadequate refugee camps, which is a common theme throughout history, would be fair.
Comparing them to nazi concentration camps is just plain fucking stupid. The Nazis didn't have extermination camps until they'd been in power for 8 years.
-
2019-07-25 at 11:57 PM UTCBasically, the entire thread is saying (and others too lately), that ICE are directly equivalent to the concentration camps in and around ~1940 Germany.
And if anyone tries applying a little nuance toward their interpretation, they are downvotes out of the conversation and called literal Nazis, and told that Trump is literally Hitler in the early stages of his own third Reich...
He's just ramping up. -
2019-07-25 at 11:58 PM UTCSomeone even made the same comparison in either r/Israel or r/Judaism (I can't remember which).
Obviously that stirred the pot a little bit. -
2019-07-26 at 12:05 AM UTCLike, I'm generally pretty apolitical, but I can't help but be at least a little jarred when I see multiple people calling Trump Hitler (and doubling down against any counter claims of hyperbole), and calling MAGA hat wearers literal Nazis (same parenthetical situation applies), and referring to ICE as literal concentration camps (like I said, not just hyperbolicly, but unironicly and consistently, even in mainstream subs).
Like... What if this actually is history repeating itself.
I don't even care if people want to start an ethnostate or any of that...
I just don't want a gestapo (left or right) goosestepping through my town to take my shit and trynna lock me up. -
2019-07-26 at 12:15 AM UTCReddit is one big dumspter fire of an SJW shithole where the echo chambers run wild.
That site dosent suprise me anymore -
2019-07-26 at 12:19 AM UTCWhat's sad is, it wasn't like that until gamer gate

2019-07-26 at 12:35 AM UTCI still feel that some new residence of hispanic orgin look at me as If I remind them too much of trump.
I always try and comfort yet I dont speak spanish to let them know I'm far from that guy. A: The wall is a joke and not only based on racism for being pushed (even though Obama too had funded for it's construction) but that it's just a waste of fucking money.
B: all of that steel and concrete could be used for much needed housing. especially in the bay area where companies can't even fill Jobs because no one can fucking afford homes. not even 100k a year hipster fucks. renting out closet space for 1200 a month just to save money.
fuck sakes. get these fucking homeless people into shelters NOW. it's growing old. Shit is everywhere. Shanty towns. Starting to look like South Africa -
2019-07-26 at 1:19 AM UTCHere's the thing about the detention centers:
Locking illegal immigrants up is just.
Deporting illegal immigrants is just.
Keeping them in overcrowded quarters where they have to share beds is not just.
Sending children to court without their parents or a lawyer is not just.
Keeping them without showers is not just.
Denying them a quick trial is not just.
Detaining legal immigrants under the assumption they are illegal because of the color of their skin is not just.
I am not sure what else is going on as I haven't kept up with it too much, but this is a massive humanitarian violation that is going on. Not comparable to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, or the Uyghur camps in China today, but it's still very fucked up and a lack of funding should not be any sort of excuse. Everybody seems to talk about this lack of funding being the cause like that makes it okay.
But it's not. Humanitarian violations are never okay. Everybody seems to accept that lack of funding is the main issue here, and not actually that we WANT TO or SHOULD BE keeping people in these conditions, yet we've got people like Trump publicly defending the garbage treatment in these places even though he signed an emergency funding bill for it earlier this month. But we've still yet to see conditions actually change for these people.
Nobody gave a fuck when people suspected of terrorism were kept in inhumanitarian conditions, because they were terrorists.
Nobody gives a fuck when illegal immigrants are kept in inhumanitarian conditions, because they are illegal.
The private prison industry in America is already a fucking mess of convoluted slavery and overcrowding. But nobody cares. Because they're criminals.
This sort of behavior is EXACTLY the sort of slippery slope that has happened all around the world, and yes, has led to the sorts of camps like those of Nazi Germany, or the ones in Xinjiang. We cannot allow any treatment of any human, even criminals, to fall below the standard of basic human care that any first world nation should provide as default for any within its system. We are not quite at the atrocities of a concentration camp, but there are clear humanitarian violations going on that need to be stopped dead in their tracks right here and now.
Trump absolutely has a sort of fascist, racist following that THANK FUCK isn't very strong, and will die out of the limelight when he leaves office. I mean, the dude literally has posted memes about him staying in office forever, and has expressed a desire to extend his term multiple times. That shit is un-American. Our forefathers fought tooth and nail to create a country free from that sort of autocracy. We're ticking all the boxes of a regime starter kit here. The demonization of select groups (Mexicans, jedis, Gypsies, Muslims, Christians, take your pick) is a prevalent theme in these sort of governments.
I can't believe there are some Republicans who actually support Trump staying in power forever. You know who just removed presidental term limits last year? Fucking Xi Jinping. Yes, China used to elect their president. It was a closed election in which only high ranking officials could vote in, so it was obviously corrupt as hell to begin with, but there was at least a sliver of chance that they could boot him out. Recently there has been a push in Russia to remove/ammend some article in their constitution that will allow Putin to 'run' for President again in 2024, and every 6 years after that. Are these really the governments we wish to emulate? -

There was a lot in your post, and I only truncated here to be pragmatic in reply...
But yeah, I'm pretty much on board with just about everything you say.
Heck, I'll even go so far as to posit that the so-called "illegal" immigrants might deserve equal treatment to the legal immigrants...
How do they even distinguish anyway?
The underlying fact is that, as cliche as it sounds, both countries (Canada and the USA) were truly founded by immigrants.
If we factor race, religion, etc out of the equation (which we really should do - Islamic extremism might muddy the waters, but let's put that aside for a sec), then denying foreigners access to Canada and the US is basically like saying "na na na na na, we got here first, find your own second continent".
AND, even on top of that, there is absolutely the ethical issue of treating humans badly simply because they aren't citizens.
Like, if some intergalactic species started snatching humans up in droves as soon as we start exploring outer space, I'd be damn thankful if they at least have some kind of intergalactic ambassador that ensures we lowly earthlings are treated ethically and with some dignity.
Like, there is A LOT to unpack from this whole debate.
I just wanna know if it really has reached Hitler levels on other peoples' scales, and not just the "SJW" trigger happy brigade hyperbolizing everything. -
2019-07-26 at 2:18 AM UTCAddendum: I just want to add that I think I can confidently say that I agree with the severity of the issue.
The fact that some were drawing direct comparisons to 1940 Germany and calling the detention centers concentration camps (and also, btw, doubling down any time someone pointed out that the analogy may not be completely apt), all kinda put me off.
But I was willing to explore and seek out other perspectives.
I'm sure NiS was probably one of the least ideal places to do this, but I'm glad I did because §m£ÂgØL I respect your opinion quite a lot.
The sad state of affairs is that meme politics has almost entirely superceded legitimate political discourse these days.
I still remain mostly nonpartisan, but damn if I won't say something if human beings are being detained in deplorable positions, especially when others are like "lol y they not just go home?"
I swear to God, if they aren't native/aboriginal, they need to shut the fuck up. -
