    The strain “Thai Stick,” was grown by the hill tribes in northeast Thailand. It became "popular" in the U.S when returning veterans came back from Nam. But the real stuff was nothing like LSD.
    
    So while I can't dispute your personal experience I can say with confidence that if the "Thai Stick" you smoked made you trip it was not "Thai Stick" it was weed tied to a stick and dipped in something besides opium. In that era based on your description I would guess PCP.

    No it wasn't. There are only a handful of times that phencyclidine has ever been a popular drug and it's mostly Limited to certain geographic area.
    
    California and some eastern US states are the only places it was ever popular. It's not a popular drug to manufacture because the synthesis is difficult and can produce toxic byproducts
    
    Also dissociatives have never really caught on with the mainstream, ketamine is easier to make than PCP and does have a wide geographic range of consumption but it's nowhere near as popular as other drugs and probably never will be
