I've been screwing around with google cardboard goggles and Trinus cardboard software.
So far I'm not very impressed.
I would like to buy a standalone system but there are so many to choose from and I know that once I do buy one its going to be outdated like the next day.
So what do you guys think of VR and if you do have a unit lets here about it.

i got a vive and a gtx1080 in 2016, had a lot of fun with it but in 2016 and 2017 most of the games were early release so it was like paying 20-60 bucks for what felt like a demo. the most fun i had was an adaptation of several portal 2 missions.

i left it with my friend for about a yr while i was away and reclaimed it but never set it back up. it would be fun to see the newer titles or updated games

I just got the new Occulus Rift S this past weekend for $399.

I'm pleased with the purchase, forget the cardboard and "stick your phone in it" crap "real" VR headsets are way beyond those.

I got Skyrim VR for it, that's pretty amazing..it's like you're there I've spent most of the time since checking out the hot NPCs and trying to touch them up.

I also got Apollo 11 HD and was walking around the moon's surface last night and chillin with Neil Armstrong.

I did think about getting the Occulus Quest which is also $399 but stand alone...glad I didn't. You're very limited on content on that. Certainly no Skyrim or other Steam VR stuff. You're better with the Rift S if you have a computer than can handle it...even to the point that if you need to spend some money on updating your computer that's the way to go rather than the limited occulus quest.

I got a Nvidia GTX 1060 off letitgo for $70 and that handles it fine, my processor is an I5 4460 (I think) which also handles it fine.

Do mods work the same way for Skyrim VR? You could turn into a porn game easy.

I got the Lenovo Explorer for $250 on sale because it doesn't require any beacons for head tracking. Instead it uses the camera to track the room, but the trade-off is it is less accurate in low light so you need good lighting. However, that's a complete non problem for me, I just turn off the fan lights when I'm using it. The visual quality is pretty good and the controllers are nice. The best game is Beat Saber IMO.

I'm pretty psyched for Tetris Effect too, I've heard it's good on PSVR.

The new Rift S doesn't use beacons either, uses cams in the headset and works great, no problems so far. Only 1 cable too, (split at the end to 1 USB3 and 1 display port)

Google Earth is also great on VR. It supports street level too so I can go home to England whenever I want an wander around my old home town.

I believe that one has more of its own IR light sources, so the tracking is better.

For me it's 100% fine when the ceiling light is on. The reason I got and like the Explorer is because A) it was cheap as fuck and B) it has the 1440p resolution and inside-out tracking like this that newer headsets are only just receiving now.

The downside is that my interpupillary distance is 70mm whereas the ipd of the headset is locked to 65. There is a virtual adjustment possible but the physical lenses don't move so it's bullshit.

I don't see any difference when I change the IPD thing...it is variable from 58 to 72. Don't know what mine is so I've tried all acroos the range and honestly don't see any difference...so it's either subtle as fuck or a worthless feature.

How do the movements work on those? Like do you need to walk on a treadmill or...?

For skyrim do you use a controller, or do you have to do like motion controlls to hit stuff and move your whole body around?

You can either walk, sit, stand using the 2 touch controllers.

I sit and use controller, I tried standing and using the controller but whenever I "moved" forward I'd get unstable on my feet...was only a matter of time till I would go over, crack my head on something and die right there. I guess for something like boxing standing would be better as you could duck and dodge better than sitting and not having the moving forward motion much you wouldn't be falling over everywhere.

There is a boxing game called "creed" but I haven't bought it/tried it.

It's just a matter of proper orientation, it's not really a "feature" in that it enhances anything.

You want your eyes to be looking straight ahead through the lens at the screen when in a neutral position rather than pointing inwards (or even worse trying to point outwards if you have low IPD).

Since my IOD is greater than that of my headset, mine have to point inwards, and the outer extent of my FOV is slightly distroted or cut off. So the left part of my left eye FOV will be fucked. Also I will see more negative space towards the right of my left eye FOV. And vice versa for my right eye.

I mean it's not the end of the world but it can sometimes affect the immersion because you're reminded you're looking at a screen a lot more easily when it's fucked up.

I have the Occulus Rift that I got for free a couple of years ago but never got it working on Linux...

    I should sell it.
