Roded a E-Scooter thing

  1. #1
Hit a curb yesterday and knocked my car out of alignment, so I dropped it off and had either a 20-25 minute walk back or a $6 Lyft ride, which I thought was pretty expensive for 3-4 minute drive, so I then thought of downloading Lime scooter app (We have 90% Lime here, a few Spin's) and there was a few just a minute down the block, so I searched up a referral link on reddit to save a dollar and started messing with it.

They're heavier than I thought they'd be, but they're still pretty wonky. It took me a minute or two to not feel like I was gonna fall, but it was mostly all good after that. I rode it on the sidewalk most of the way back, and tbh I'm surprised that so many people can handle these things.. They aren't bad on the street I guess, but the throttle is pretty shitty. It's stiff and there's very little play with it between not engaged and full speed, which sucks because it's not sturdy enough for me to want to go full speed all the time, especially on the sidewalks (which you aren't supposed to go on but I don't care lol).

The handlebar is O.K., but it's soft and not necessarily good enough to get you out of a jam. I understand that it needs to be light enough that you can't go head over heels by hard braking, but the problem is that the handlebar is not sturdy enough for me to keep more than two fingers on the brake, which is too far from the handlebars for my child fingers.

With my dollar off coupon and maybe half the time spent on it just fucking around with it and not making progress towards my house + time actually spent getting to my house, it was under $3 with $1 promo code. I my posted my code on reddit and I guess 2 other people already used it so now I have 2 free "unlocks", which is the $1 required to start the scooter. Which is helpful, because I need to use it again today.

Anyway, these things are convenient because they're EVERYWHERE (and I think you can hack them with a $35 tool from ebay and keep it if you can figure out how to charge it) and they're cheaper than an uber, but they're squirrelly enough that I'd almost rather use those E bikes instead, as long as you get to leave them wherever.

My friend almost had her nose amputated over one of those things. She's not really that pretty anymore. Feel bad for her
