Anybody do work in research?

Even just during your undergrad. I'm seeking out research, rather inactively for now but I may have a basic intern gig in medical outcomes research through a friend with some pull.

What sort of research were you involved in? What kinds of literature did you have to keep up with in order to be in step with the work? What was the overall significance?

I research Schedule I and II chemical drug precursors and figure out ways to make them cheaper.

For example; Red phosphorus was used as a source to make hydiodic acid for many years. In 2016 it's not very practical to use red phosphorus for hydriodic acid so we looked for something cheaper and easier.

This is what we wound up with

more specifically KH3PO3 is sold in large amounts to commercial golf courses, lawn care companies and it can easily be converted to pure H3PO3 with muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide.

This method is so underground and new that is has never been reported in clandestine literature anywhere else in the world.

Research already tends to be bad enough, I'd question trusting undergrads with even grunt work.

Also, Lanny desperately wishes he could renounce his affluent SF financial tech lifestyle and become a serious part of academia. You are his wet dream.

As usual malice goes and makes things oh so dramatic but there is a kernel of truth there.

I did some research with biomedical imaging and mesh construction when I was an undergrad, I've been considering grad school because research was very rewarding work on a personal level. I wasn't really "keeping up" with research in the field, I was more trying to survey the field and look for prior work on the subject I was looking at, so trawling through JSTOR and back issues of ACM/IEEE. I probably skimmed a hundred plus papers over a semester although there ended up being like 5 or 6 that I really needed and dug into in depth.

I didn't think that was particularly dramatic.

I think you should go to grad school. It would be a terrible decision leaving you profoundly disillusioned, bitter, resentful, unfulfilled, and at best you may only meet some people you have an affinity towards (this could well have been done in a far more effective manner outside of school, but the concentration of people of a general higher quality and who share similar interests can be nice), but it seems like the right path/decision for you.

You can fucking afford it, go back to school. At the very least it may somewhat assuage your guilt and cause you to feel like you come close to earning 2/3 of your income.
