Interestingly, July 1st was also the date of a huge battle in ww1 (beaumont Hamel) which included huge regiments of Newfoundlanders which was at that time, not part of Canada but part of the UK. They were mercilessly slaughtered and like 20% of the young Newfie men died in the battle, basically used as cannon fodder by Britain who later abandoned them, didn't give them a thing until ww2 when they used it as a forward operating base then in 1949 Newfoundland was sick of the fucking shit and Joey smallwood convinced the drunks to join canada. Rocklin from intosanctuary and rdfrn was from newfoundland but lived in Alberta as many newfies do. It's a weird place.
So basically Newfoundland, Quebec and the 3 territories don't really celebrate Canada Day. -

You can despise the British for that, they wanted to contain Germany before WWI broke out, since due to the unification of all German speaking principalities, city-states and whatnot by Otto von Bismarck, and overseas colonies. Germany was the rising star in Europe. The triple entente was agreed upon to contain Germany in central Europe. There were numerous incidents before the outbreak of war wherein certain groups within the English government were trying to start a war or lobby for war with Germany. When it did happen it left Germany in real bad shape afterwards, so much so that i would argue that the treaty of Versailles was one of the main contributing factors to Hitler's rise to power and subsequently the outbreak of WWII. -
