    I was wondering why I haven't heard of the concept since I:
    1. Have a B.A. in Psychology.
    2. Had a focal interest in cognition and memory.

    Basically, defense mechanisms are rooted in the psychoanalytic tradition originating with Sigmund Freud, and so they have kind of a shaky empirical foundation.

    But they are an interesting topic though.

    Although I have no idea why the texture of my hair as a child would be traumatizing in any way.
