   I don't know if it's a Christian thing like Mathews or something where they look down and saw Satan and the Octopi below him. The Octopi known for black ink is viewed as black ooze or slime that covers your soul. the black ink represents the clouding of ones soul. So the Octopus is used in lots of proverbial statements I suppose.
