We eventually saw enough of their crafts over a long enough period of time to ponder how it works, and eventually some of us figured it out, sort of.
That would be people who ended up forced to work for the military, or who had all their inventions stolen by the military who then takes credit for everything.
And then they'd rather us believe it "may just be aliens" and that we don't have similar crafts. Always gotta leave people undecided. -

Aliens are the simplest explanation. For instance the tether incident can only reasonably be explained as being some sort of space-wildlife imo.
