Bank robberies are so cool it's a shame they have trash returns compared to armored vans

Agreed. And with all the dye packs in bills these days... it's really not worth it. If you're successful the first time... you'll get addicted to The Thrill of the rush and the cash and you'll be compelled to do it until you get caught.

I don't have the balls... or the defective brain that tells me it's a good idea.

Me and a couple friends used to gather and plot hypothetical targeted/high-return robberies and armored car heists.

They were actually serious about it, and they had no rules either.

I was mostly theoretical about it... unless we could plan one where no one gets kills or seriously injured. At the time, I would have totally followed through if we could have guaranteed no casualties/injuries.

Unfortunately my friends didn't give a fuck about the "NPC's" out there.

    No robbery can guarantee that.

Back in 2004, before ATM skimming was as well-known by the general populace as it is now, a friend and I were constructing a skimmer ourselves.

We modified the card reader to fit on the card slot. We set up a tiny spy cam so that it would blend in with the rest of the ATM (for monitoring the PIN). We staked out ATM's and watched them to determine how often they were refilled, how many customers used them during peak hours, and how much money each would take out on average.

Man, we were gonna be hella rich. We estimated, conservatively, like a $100,000 return for a single night... Potentially way more... And if we did it at multiple ATM's (most likely in different cities), we'd have cleared a million in no time.

But then, being barely out of our teenage years, we got into some petty rivalry over something stupid, and everything fell to pieces.

    I like to reminisce, tho.

If guns are involved, then yes... that's most definitely true.

My plans always involved some kind of non-fatal incapacitating agent (like a paralytic projectile or something).

Like I said, I was mostly just spitballing theoretical ideas. I have no idea if such a thing would be both guaranteed to work and guaranteed not to kill.

I guess it's OK to tell everyone this now, I heard years ago that they have a bill (Forget the name.. it's a marker bill) with GPS chips in them. they send off their location when they're powered up by cell phone radiation.

this is well known now, Apple makes Apple chips and they're even smaller these days. Nano size.

The old days they just marked certain bills with black light markings and there is other details involved I forget which helps them know how it was passed around. but today they place the GPS chips in the center of the bill layers with the watermarks.

again, this is past ten years old. and only Banks and certain places (like casinos) will have them, so if you bolt off with stacks of their money, they know where it is going in real time.

That's interesting. It had never occurred to me that such a thing were possible.

I mean, the GPS chip is still going to be quite obviously visible to someone if they go through all the bills. GPS trackers are still no smaller than, say, a large coin. But of course no robber is going to have the time to sit there and sift through them all until they spot such a device.

correct, but they are wafers .. very thin. and they're saying now they have them that can fit inside pills. to monitor people released from hospitals and such.

it's coming very close for this technology to be common.

But to answer this, yes, it's only for the short time of it. Luckily most banks don't cary much cash. the ATMs do. most people go into banks to deposit checks. they like being discrete and remove cash from their accounts outside of the banks. Point being.. banks don't have the half million in the vaults they once did.

Some form of Faraday cage/bag or even a foil bag renders them very quickly useless.
