   Imagine if you went to study in China for a few years, dated a local and wanted to stay there.
   
   Everyone here would think you were red (just look at TV and how China is being military at America and hanging out with Russia and North Korea) and in China they would think you were CIA.
   
   It's a lose lose situation.
   
   No one would trust you. In America they would think you were a Chinese spy, and in China, they would never trust you.

   Reverse that situation. If you become a tiny bit political, and refuse the Chinese government the ability to use you for propaganda, they will state you are hostile to their system OR undeclared US government.
   
   They will say you are trying to undermine the government or spreading foreign influence to erode confidence in the government.
   
   And they will deport you, or arrest you for espionage, or prevent you being allowed in public because you are a threat to social order. No more university, no more job, no way to support yourself. You would have to leave.
