2019-03-07 at 10:34 AM UTCNo because your shitty knockoff wouldn’t have the same level of traffic, or total lineage this site has.
I would pay that much for the original totse.com domain though. But it’s also not for sale -

You underestimate the power of marketing, PR, SEO, and administration policies.
Why do you think NiS is even all that popular?
It's 50% people just looking for a Totse/Zoklet alternative, and 50% DHers.
If you can create an environment that appeals to that same crowd, then it becomes a matter of subtly marketing and PR techniques to draw members. -

My site will be an EXACT replica of the original Totse (hosting all the text files, all in the same categories, same CSS / stylistic design, etc).
The forum banner and links just link here though for now.
Setting up, and maintaining a forum, is actually a bit of work.
For now, Lanny is doing a standup job so no need at the moment. -
2019-03-07 at 10:45 AM UTCIt’s not popular and I know it’s not. Even if Lanny put ads on here it probably would make less than $100 a month. I just want to own the totse legacy.

You didn't even make a forum and it already sounds like cancer. I'm just glad you didn't say Brand[ing]. -

I don't know much about you Nil, but I grew up on Totse.
Preserving Totse is worth all kinds of sacrifice (to me).
I don't necessarily care if it becomes a hotbed of activity like Reddit or 4Chan... I just want to bring back some of the principles and ideas that the site originally stood for.
And if I fail, I don't even care.
It's just a project. It can succeed, fail, or just perform adequately.
Either way, I can say that I tried, and that's good enough for me. -
2019-03-07 at 11:11 AM UTCThe way you put it was as though &T was some product that just needed a bit of marketing and "PR" just irked me a bit and I can't really nail down why. Also kind of reminded me of Helladamnleet promoting newtotse, hence the featurez post.

It's not so much about marketing in the traditional corporate sense...
I just mean getting the word out there.
I use certain terms and phrases interchangeably, like "marketing", "promoting", "spreading awareness of", etc...
Back in Totse's heyday, it was busy enough that each subforum necessitated it's own moderators.
To me, having more people (especially if they are like-minded to the rest of us) is always a good thing. -

I'd rather have more diversity of opinions than just more people. That's one thing I don't like about reddit, besides the enforced civility and censorship it's broken up into a series of echochambers. I don't think the temple can be rebuilt though, trying to compete with newer glitzier social media platforms wouldn't play today. In '06 totse was big, so was somethingawful and bombshock(lol sry). I feel like the medium doesn't have the appeal today. -
2019-03-07 at 11:33 AM UTCThe reason it won’t work today is because it’s a new generation. Fuck I sound old. I’m 26 but these kids nowadays wouldn’t even understand the concept or culture of totse. They’re all about social media bullshit and just spamming memes.
Back in the early 2000’s when I was on &t, the internet wasn’t even fuckin mainstream yet. Now it’s ubiquitous and taken for granted
