Would you feel bad if you told someone to kill themselves on the internet and...
-
2019-02-26 at 5:44 AM UTCthey actually did it? And somehow you knew it was literally because you told them to do so and they would have had a perfectly happy life otherwise? Would you regret telling them to kill themselves then? Would you do it again if you knew the same thing could happen?

2019-02-26 at 5:54 AM UTCI don’t know if I could live with it.
-
2019-02-26 at 5:56 AM UTCI would feel bad, although I would probably do it again. Not gonna let some suicide ruin me being able to tell people to kill themselves.
-
2019-02-26 at 5:58 AM UTCMy own personal policy is to just avoid saying such extreme things in the first place.
But, admittedly, I essentially told someone to kill themselves the other day...
It was Grylls, after like the dozenth post of his I had seen THAT DAY ALONE telling other people to kill themselves, I just kinda knee-jerk responded with "You know, you could always lead by example."
Clearly Grylls has not killed himself, but, I still kinda felt bad that I even resorted to that.
But, I also realize that I'm kind of anomalous in this day and age where everyone tells each other "kill yourself nigger faggot" like it's a casual hand shake or something. I generally try to avoid insulting people online (for the most part, at least). -

I'd be some kind of god -

That's definitely another big factor.
In fact, one of the main reasons I'm so reluctant to use such harsh insults is because... What if that person I, even in jest, told to kill themselves, was already dealing with some serious depression or going through something else in their lives, and I just pushed them over the edge?
I don't want to be the last nail in anyone's coffin. -
2019-02-26 at 6:37 AM UTCIn your scenario I think most anyone would feel bad for causing the suicide of someone who was perfectly happy. It's kind of a loaded question. Anybody who says "no I wouldn't feel bad" is either a psychopath or a troll.
In a real world scenario I would absolutely not feel bad about it because there's no possible way I would be at fault for a stranger offing themselves. -

But if they were already looming on the precipice of suicide valley, and were just itching for a reason to go through with it... Your words might not be solely responsible for them following through, but you have to admit that you clearly would have played a role.
There's just something about the medium of the Internet that makes it seem less real. But there are real people on the other end of that screen.
If there was some depressed kid in your class in school, I highly doubt you'd tell them to kill themselves during a schoolyard squabble... So why do it if there's only the Internet in between the two of you? -

Well, it's the internet. You should have a thicker skin on the internet.
If somebody told me to "fuck off faggot" in real life to end an argument, it probably would make me pretty angry. On the internet though, that's entry level trolling. Doesn't even register.
It's a role, sure, but it's a very minimal role. I'm not the one who broke up with them, or the cancer that killed their dad, or their alcoholism, or any other problems they may have. Those are the real heavyweights. -

Fona is kind of a little shit. I gave him my number once and he left dozens of calls and texts. He saved a picture of me for like 6 years and then posted it here. In Tinychat he's shared the personal information of others with me that he should absolutely not have shared.
There was some guy in TC a while ago that was the friend of Fona's brother and he said IRL he acts legitimately crazy. I think he's got some honest to God mental issues. -

And then literally seconds later, in that other thread, when I asked when the last time was he read a book...

It sucked and I set fire to it.
Yep, he might just be a tad on the crazy side. The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
