Store enterance scanners

2019-02-06 at 5:41 AM UTCAKA RFID or whatever. The scanners at walmart and such shopping centres that go "boop boop boop" when you try to walk out with merchandise.
WHAT EXACTLY will set these off, and what will be unaffected? Obviously high ticket stuff will, but what about a bag of doritos or a bottle of bundy?
What kind of special tags do RF sensitive items have on them? Will any barcode do it until they are "unscanned", so to speak, or only certain ones? -
2019-02-06 at 5:50 AM UTCDepends on the store, you can usually tell which items are tagged because they have a thick, square barcode sticker but there are a lot of different kinds of tags available nowadays. Google images > RFID stickers.
How it works is the sticker has an antenna and a very simple circuit - as you walk through the 'towers' they constantly send out power via radio waves. The waves are caught by the antenna on the tag, and they carry enough power to momentarily charge the circuit, which sends out a signal on a very specific frequency. When the towers see that signal, they recognise that a tag is in the vicinity and sound the alarm.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

Should be easy to jam the signal then. I wonder if anyone ever thought about doing that. Set some spark-gap transmitters or more specific jammer circuits outside the store, remotely activate before walking out. -

If you set off the scanners enough they will turn them off.
That also works for almost all alarms btw.
Also the tags are delicate and easy to destroy, for instance if you cut them with a knife.
I'm sure they could also be deactivated, but I have no idea what that would entail.
They cost like €0.10c each (I think) so they're only worth putting on high value or high shrinkage items. -

The solution to bypassing this technology is to bring your own lead lined shopping bags with you and slip the stolen items in after you check out buying a pack of gum. -

Basically at the self checkout I mostly get like a bunch of organic and expensive produce and ring it up as like potatoes and bananas. Also, I had meat that didn't scan one time so I just put it in the paper bag and nothing happened. I've started eating a lot more produce now. I read that like, 20% of people do that. Thinking about trying this with steak and other more expensive meat.
I don't know if they even keep track of pounds of meat and produce brought in and sold (by weight). I think they might just tally $ amount purchased and $ amount sold in those departments. Even if not, I don't think there's any way they could tell which person didn't ring up their M&P. Self checkout is like barely monitored anyway. -

the cost of everything sold is like 1/10 of their price. by selling one theybhave already recouped the cost of the 9 other merchandizes.
