Starting a car in extremely cold weather thread

  1. #1
    I was supposed to work today, but car battery was like haha, there's no way bud.

    I put a bath towel over the battery, and it's supposed to get like, seven degrees warmer, so -19 instead of -26 when I tried. Unfortunately I live too far from the gas station to go buy some ether (don't know if the gas is gelling or not, which makes me nervous to keep trying to start it..putting more shit through the lines) or something to warm the battery.

    Do you think this will work? What tricks do you know to getting a battery warmer or getting a cold start going in general?

    Especially looking for ACP and Poletart's insight.

    always store a spare battery in a polisteriine box in the winter.

    and a piair of jumpers.

    Do you have a directional heater? Or try a blow dryer.

    Invest in an electric blanket. Wrap it around the engine bay and battery about an hour or so before you go out.

    It's the wind that kills it. Just have to push it inside a shed, out of the wind, and let it sit for a couple of hours then try again.

    I'm not mad at the niggas,, its just they are from another fucked up world than I am.

    if it turns over but wont start you need starting fluid or a warm garage.
    if its a dead Battery or a froze battery ur kinda fucked if you dont have a battery charger,, a charger will warm the battery as it charges,, if its an older battery it may be time for a new one as old batterys dont hold the charge of a newer one and the much colder weather makes everything harder to rotate or move making it necessary to have all the cranking amps possible.

    a propane salamander heater pointed at the front of the car may warm it up enough to get it to start if the battery is up to snuff.
    if its got fuel injection you may be able to find a schrader valve ,, it looks like a tire valve with a cap you remove that can be depressed to see if you have fuel pressure,, just like letting the air out of a bike tire,, if it squirts fuel I doubt its froze gas,, if it is froze gas nothing short of several hrs in a heated garage will get it warm enough to thaw the gas so it will start.

    if the latter is the issue dont forget to add dry gas to the tank before going back out in the cold with it.

    I'll give this info freely but itl be the last unless lammy gets us some real white women posting on here preferably in there early 20's

    Always turn your lights on in really cold weather before starting warms the battery up before the jolt of needing all the cranking amps.

    Keep your gas full. Less gelling

    You can hook your battery up to a tender in sub zero temps

    Polecat's giving good advice just be careful if you use the salamander, I've seen guy's melt the hell out of the plastic grills most cars have anymore

    This is good advice. I think it's the battery mostly because it didn't want to turn much at all and the instrument panel was barely lit and only a couple things showed at all. I hope freezing it doesn't drain it even after it warms up. I don't know if that's how it works or not.

    You could..

    Keep your battery cozy so it's got more guts to spin your motor;
    Easiest to install ~40 Bucks

    ---

    And/or put heat into your oil pan so the motor will be easier to turn;
    Easy to install, this kind you silicone-adhesive on but there are magnetic versions too if you want simple install or ease of
    removal. ~40 Bucks

    ---

    And/or heat your engine coolant;
    These seem to be the highest-power so I think they would help you get to operating temperature the quickest. Mmmm, warm air from the vents as soon as you start the car sounds nice. Don't know what motor you have but there are generally manufacturer/motor-specific block-heaters available that you put into the engine, replacing one of the freeze-plugs. The one pictured is a different style, might be hard finding room to mount something like it on a modern car. ~50-100 Bucks

    The battery blanket and the oil pan heaters are usually only a hundred watts or so, but the coolant/block heaters are frequently 1000+ watts which might be worth running off of a timer for energy saving.

    It's 60F here, I'm wearing flip-flops airing out my trench feet. I've never stayed anywhere cold enough to gel up gasoline. I want to build an adventure vehicle with all of the above types of heaters though, and possibly a fuel-fired coolant heater like an Espar or Webasto ( $$$ !!! )
