question about nas hard drive

   Could a nas hard drive running 24/7 last more than a decade.
   Like, I have a nas with 4 6tb hard drives if I'm playing video files from the nas nonstop could the drives last a decade?
   Should I go for a raid mode?
   Right now I just have all the drives pooled together to form one large virtual drive

   I average 4-6yrs with one. I back up shit to 3 drives and 3 cloud servers. when one fails I just sync it back up

    NAS-designed harddrives (designed for constant use) have a warranty of 5 years, so you'd probably have to be pretty lucky to have one last twice that long, let alone an array of them.
    
    
    What you have set up is RAID 0, which pretty much just creates a logical volume from all available space on the drives. If one drive fails you lose all of the data on the volume because it's spread all across the different physical media, like taking a bunch of random pieces from a completed jigsaw.
    
    If you're concerned about recovery you could set up a RAID stripe/mirror configuration, but you'd have less space to use because a portion of it is assigned to backup and redundancy. I recommend reading about the different layouts:

    If a hard drive lasts a year (to remove early mortalities) 10 years is very doable, but can't ever be guaranteed.
    
    If you watch the SMART data you can often predict drive failures.
    The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

    forgot about that but I always found SMART warnings to only come up extremely close to failure
