Who would you layoff?

So we got a little slow as we always do in December. The question being asked of me was do we need 4 technicians in this department? The answer is yes (fuckers already know the answer) but then the question was, who can we lay off? FUCK! Why do we have to lay anyone off? Suck it up and let us take a break, clean up the shop and repair the vehicles and equipment we beat up all year long? So that is what we are doing.

It brings up the question of who would I chose to lay off if I had to? The top 2 guys aren't going anywhere, too much invested in their training etc. It's the bottom 2. I have a young kid with a newborn and another child just over a year. He is green, doesn't cost a lot yet and is highly trainable.

The other guy is middle aged but has been around the block. He hasn't worked in this industry but you can tell his experience guides him in his work with us and has amazed us with his capabilities.

Ok so if I didn't know anything personal about these guys I would lay off the young guy. But knowing he has a young family makes this choice tough. Luckily I don't have to make this choice as things are coming back around big time. It just got me to thinking what would you do?

Lol yeah man I'm sure you can find it too funny you don't have to read it all but I don't support delusions anymore because you are so dissociated in the same way you lose brain cells normally and you don't have to do that to the people

You have to look at it objectively. You said you would lay off the young guy if you didn’t know anything personal about them. I assume that’s due to his lack of experience and the other guy is more qualified. Then you introduced other factor, such as perhaps marital status and age. You’re thinking about choosing the middle aged guy because of his marital status and age. Now I don’t think family and marital status are protected, but age is a protected class. If the guy is over 40, which I assume he is because you said middle aged, then you could have a lawsuit on your hands. Look at it objectively and make sure you can justify your decision.

Luckily I don't have to deal with it now, work is picking up. But damn that's the bad part of my job.

If you aren't willing to cut someone this easily they should replace you with someone who can.

Like me. If I know layoffs are coming I will poison your lunch in the fridge so you use up your sick days and look bad to management.
