I don't even bother with online games anymore, I am giving up all hope on being hyped for anything because no matter what game it is they will cram a bunch of retarded bullshit into the online which dilutes the experience.
Even smash bros is fucked, I bought all the DLC twice and now there's a new version with all those characters for free and they will release another version in 5 years with more DLC.
Even free to play games have these stupid options to "support the game" at $60 or offers you 'whale packs' for like $200. I think all of this is bullshit, it started with fallout 3 having $60 worth of DLC because if you don't have broken steel the game just ends so it's actually not even the 'full' version of fallout 3. They sold the game twice and chopped it up, at least New Vegas had an actual ending.
Fuck modern games and fuck the industry. I also blame the consumers for allowing this shit to happen in the first place and falling for the same tricks every time.

I feel the same way. My irl gamer friends I've known since childhood have all already bought Fallout 76 and Red Dead 2 and while I do want to play these games I don't at the same time and haven't had the motivation to actually buy them. They market their games in such a way that you end up chasing the dream, trying to play that perfect game the way you wish it was when in reality they just sell you overpriced garbage. I'll probably get red dead after Christmas but I doubt I'll play the online part very much. Lately I've been more focused of portable retro game consoles like the Odroid Go. I've been working on another one, planning on making another thread for it when I have the time. This one has ScummVM on it, so I can play Space Quest IV at work.
Although that thief simulator game is looking good.

The PS5 is coming out in 2020 or 2021. 8th gen feels like it started only a few years ago. It seems so soon. New hardware is definitely required though for VR.

Nothing has changed, regarding the bolded point. The market has always been inundated with games that could only be described as passionless cash-grabs. It's just gotten to the point where many of the "good games" are also becoming passionless cash-grabs. For every Doom, there have always been 100 soulless doom clones. And even Doom ended up indirectly resulting in Daikatana. From the very beginning of gaming, we've had the same problems we're having now.
Pretty much the only things that are new are some business models: DLC and microtransactions, and both can be done in ways that are actually a good thing for gaming. So really, it's the same as ever - some bad faith actors soullessly trying to make money in the most despicable way possible... essentially, filling the same niche as the shovelware developers of yore.
Cyberpunk 2077 looks so badass, made by cd projekt, the last of us 2 should come out this year hopefully, the first one was badass and I like naughty dog. I'm going to buy rd2 but haven't yet, IDC if the online is a scam it looks like a fun game even though I've never liked rockstar very much.
I fucking warned you about Fallout 76 bro. Who on earth could look at what beth did to the TES franchise and think 76 was going to be good?
Rockstar's online stuff is garbage but RDR2's single player justifies the purchase easily. It's not perfect but what it does well it does damn well.
New smash is a pretty different game from tr4ash. Smash DLC is kinda scummy but if you don't want to main a DLC character then it really doesn't matter. Also Cloud in ultimate is nerfed so fucking hard, I get that he was OP in 4 and having one of the best characters in the game be DLC is kinda shitty but pulling off some sick 4 piece combo shit with his now reduced hitboxes and high startup moves to get 25% and gimped off stage because his recovery is hot garbage is the most unsatisfying thing holy shit.
