Originally posted by aldra My suspicion is that Erdogan seized upon this as a political opportunity, made demands of the Saudis and slowly leaked evidence of the killing until they complied, which they appear to have done judging by the fact that there have been no recent 'leaks'. I'm not certain what these demands were, but it's likely that at least part of it was handing over command of the Saudi-controlled rebels in Syria to Turkey.
OK it looks like Erdongman didn't get what he wanted because he's now claimed to have forwarded the murder audio to Saudi Arabia, US, UK, France & Germany (link, rt).
Given recent developments, I believe that his demands from KSA are likely to be related to Pakistan, which KSA currently commands huge influence in and is proving to be a major peg in China's BRI projects (which Turkey is set to profit substantially from) as well as a current oil pipeline battle (again, which Turkey is set to profit substantially from... if Pakistan picks the right pipeline). -

google translate wouldn't work on the page so I just fed the body of the article through, I'm still going over it now because the translation's a bit of a mess:
Here's a summary on RT if you don't care about the details:

2018-11-20 at 4:18 PM UTCInteresting, looks like Turkey planted hidden audio recorders inside the embassy and were able to capture multiple calls to MbS' personal adviser during the... dissassembly.
This would indicate that Turkey had foreknowledge of the event and allowed it to happen, making it seem very likely that Erdogan engineered it specifically to entrap KSA and have MbS at his mercy. -

the 'official story' that's leaked out seems to have been that they strangled him with a plastic bag over his head, injected him with a muscle relaxant or something so he couldn't fight back then took him apart.
which means the actual audio of him getting sawed probably sounds like a deaf girl getting fingerblasted in wood shop -

I had not considered this.
My *tentative* belief was Khoshoggi was trying to broker some kind of agreement between Saudi Arabia and Erdogan's opposition who had been significantly weakened in Erdogan's post-coup-attempt-purges. Erdogan knew about this and was somehow able to make MbS believe that Khoshoggi was actually trying to play them, which would explain the brutal murder instead of just giving him a Saudi haircut.
As for what he wants, it's hard to tell. I'd think the two major points of contention between Turkey and KSA are control of Syrian militants and political clout in Pakistan (which is now a major intersection for competing gas transit lines, like Syria was pre-war, as well as a major node for China's Eurasian integration project). Regardless, it's obvious he hasn't gotten it because evidence keeps slowly leaking out.
I don't see any other major power who would benefit from this. Iran is the only one that makes sense, and if Turkey and Iran were to work together it would mean a huge shift in both geopolitics and energy markets. There's a lot that would make sense here, but I don't see Iran helping Turkey gain power or vice versa because Erdogan is essentially Sultan of the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the two major hardline Sunni schools that Iran (rightly) considers terrorists. -

one of the first thing that came to my mind was some sort of palace intrigue, ie, the team that killed and dismembered the actor (reporter) was actually loyalist of some other prince (who is either incarcerated or ignored or had been relegated to lesser position) that conspired with turkey to frame and dethrone MbS.
this seems like a win-win scenario for both the renage prince and turkey and who knows, maybe russia or a certain group in the US.
idk, it could be an interesting drama.
