    Gold was probably the first metal found by humans as it doesn't tarnish or enter into compounds with other substances easily, so you can find it just lying around, you don't need a furnace to refine it, or any way to clean it or anything, just find a lump of it in a river, beat it into shape, and you have some nice shiny bling.
