This is a very succinct way of summarizing my position on the manner as well.

I loved majoring in psychology and philosophy, but I taught myself programming on the side as a backup plan in case I didn't get into the whole academia thing.

Don't look at school as a financial investment that's meant to return financial dividends. It very, very likely won't.

But if you see it as a time and financial investment that pays in the less tangible dividends of personal growth and life experience, then it starts to become more worthwhile.

Now, if you can find something that intrigues you AND has high employment and salary potential, then you've won the lottery.
