there's no way for the US to compete without somehow blocking Russian gas from the EU market, and given Germany's commitment to the Nord Stream 2 I don't see that happening

You strike me as one of the more savoy people here. It's unfortunate your vision was clouded by indoctrination.

It's silly for the US to export natural gas - since the gas is just obtained by fracking and will be needed in future. It's like the UK going crazy exporting North Sea oil back in the '70s - and now having to import oil -instead of conserving it.

But the whole thing right now for America is to stop either Europe or China allying with Russia.

As I understand it the US has significant natural gas reserves, it's mostly crude oil that comes from shale/fracking. The economic concern is that it costs far more to ship it across the Atlantic than it does for Russia to pipe it in - logistics costs to actually get it to the European market make it noncompetitive.

One of their major geopolitical goals is to drive a wedge between China and Russia, but everything they've done has instead forced them closer together.

Europe's more of a long-term situation - short version is that Russia and China need the European market to exceed the US economically, so the US is doing everything it can to keep them out. When it eventually comes down to it, it's likely the US will try to collapse the EU if it seems that they're going to lose the market.

The big problem with that scenario is the impending unavoidable collapse of the EU market.
