Either your memory, your knowledge of history, or both are fucked.

Of the approximately 76,000 prisoners captured by the Japanese Imperial forces when Luzon and Mariveles fell, forcing the surrender of all defending forces in the Philippines, 66,000 were Filipinos and 10,000 were American. There were no British, Australian, or Canadian troops stationed on any of the Philippine Islands and not one was forces to participate in the Bataan Death March.

During the almost 70 mile forced march through the steaming jungle without water, food, or rest some 500 Americans and 2500 Filipinos died (the majority from beatings, bayonets, and beheading).

During there imprisonment at Camp O'Donnell an additional 26,000 Filipinos and 1500 Americans died from lack of food, clean water, basic medical care, and disease. That is a 20% death rate for American POWs and 43% for Filipino POWs.

This was all part OF a greater Pacific operation which included the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor as the opening move.

The Japanese Imperial forces did not recognize rules of western warfare. If you play by the rules and the other side doesn't you will lose. That is the logic which justifies the Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However the real reason they were dropped was as a message to the Soviets. So yeah, two birds with one stone.
