While i was browsing the intertubes i found this little gem.

    http://www.stilldrinking.org/programming-sucks

It's a day in the life of a professional programmer brought to you in a uniquely cynical and entertaining fashion. I enjoyed reading it, and if you're a programmer, especially in a professional capacity i think you will enjoy it as well.

Of course he's a liberal. Lanny is a professional programmer he's more socialist than Bernie Sanders. Still funny though.

That's a great article. If you put in historical context, meaning, in the context of how stuff like the s/360 or windows nt or any big piece of computer software been built, it's all the same. 20 years ago you had some stupid manager yelling at you to finish those drivers in x86 assembly cause he wanted that sweet bonus, now you got some sjw feminazi screaming at you to tweak that swirly icon cause she wants mo money.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. What kind of development do you focus on?

    I'm afraid I can't say.

I thought about keeping my PI footprint as small as possible, but you'd figure out this stuff by my replies so might as well have it out of the way: web development with python, but also a bit of infosec so: bits of C, bits of *nix, etc.

Sweet, i do python and bash myself with a focus on infosec but hardly in a professional capacity :P

Yeah, def not a pro myself, just amateur stuff like ctfs or bug bounties. If I figure out something cool, I'll share it as I see you're doing here, good stuff manbro.

I like to think I'm something of a counterbalance to that

Good to know, do stick around. We could use more quality content by knowledgeable people here, broman.

I'll do my best, seems like a cool place, although a bit on the quiet side.

Also, I found that this article from way back, which is in tune with what you posted, except less metaphor and funnies and more down to earth advice / warning what to look out for when you program for money: http://thedailywtf.com/articles/Programming-Sucks!-Or-At-Least,-It-Ought-To-

Unfortunately this is true, but, if most of us contribute a little we will end up with a lot of content at the end of the day and who better to start than ourselves? Also, since we're talking how did you end up on our little corner of the internet? If you don't mind me asking.

The article offers an interesting insight. For me it stresses the fact that if i were to pursue a career in computer science i would probably be more inclined to research and information security in general than anything else.

True dat, I'll try to bake my share of pie since I'm here. I can't divulge how I ended up here, that'd completely unmask me! It also can't be used as a way to get more members :(.

Yeah, no wonder. You can end up on a good team and have the time of your life, but you can also end up with some crazy people, managed by assholes that think they can wake you up at 2am because a gif stopped spinning or something. I've heard it said that it's good to get some development or sysadmin experience before going for infosec, but I think it's kinda BS - if you studied CS, did K&R C, make SICP, and aced your networking and OS classes, then you're pretty ready for taking on whatever infosec can throw at you. At least that's what I think. I'm currently catching up on some OS and C concepts and maybe I'll switch to infosec in the following year, I just wanna get away from the BS I outlined above.

Oatking suspected for NSA. It makes sense since if you turn OAT around you get TAO which is the NSA's acronym for Tailored Access Operations. TAO has three letters, a triangle has three sides, illuminati confirmed.

Programmers are usually some ill conceived form of libertarian. Leftists are uncommon and authoritarian socialists are downright rare, represented usually among that hated caste known as architects. Combine somewhat smarter-than-average people with a lifetime of semi-conceited praise for fixing computers and a culture that valued a narrow technical kind of freedom which has since transformed into a shibboleth and as such is generally taken wholly out of context and you get the modern programmer: convinced markets are infallible and sometimes smart enough to pull up some self-serving paper that doesn't really say that but looks sorta close if you squint at the abstract the right way.

Interesting the influx of SJW has not significantly reversed this trend. It's as common to hear perceived bigotry described in terms of some kind of bizarre subsidy-by-patriarchy that's getting in the way of glorious markets which are totally-fair-and-never-ever-short-change-people-due-to-factors-they-have-no-control-over as it is to hear the typical leftist response which would be "regulate that which is evil".

They call it combinowanie or are proud of it vs other europeans hwo good they are at finding small ways to hustle or save money in illegal or semi legal ways. for insatcne password sharing on netflix is huge in poland, pirated software, going to store isles and pretending to pay for goods and making it seem like you did only to wlak out for free with them. etc. they call it "combinowanie" and may be the best at it in europe.

Yup, that's kinda our thing, man. That's why no one can catch us. We're so high over the clouds.

You forgot to add "managers" to the point about the hated caste. Maybe an architect isn't so different from a manager though.
