I was taught never to start a sentence with 'i' in my native tongue if i wanted to write a letter or whatever. Didn't know it was also considered polite in English. -

Not that it's necessarily "polite", it's just incredibly bad, banal taste. Every dumb fuck always wants to talk about themselves, and they will always start their conversation with I, Me, etc. You can't stop narcissism but you can do little things like make it unacceptable to start a sentence with "I".
