Are your parents the sort who expected their kid to support themselves through college? To have a job by 16, and be able to more or less pay for college by 18? What sort of expectation did they share with you growing up, and is that why your sort is so economically productive? -

Neither of my parents were really in a position to pay my tuition while I was in college. I'm sure I could have asked either of them for money and they would have done what they could but it wouldn't have been a lot and I was lucky that I never had to. A number of people in my family definitely had the ole protestant work ethic thing going, I was working in at the family business for a good part of highschool, although I don't think I really internalized that very well. To the degree that I'm "economically productive" (a lot of what I get paid for is bullshit that doesn't really need to be done) is simply that my skill set is in relatively high demand these days.
