My friend has an iPhone 6 that she found that is locked. Back when she found it, it had a message pop up on it with a number to call and it said there was a reward. She was unable to call the number due to voluntary community service and church.
Its a paper weight unless there is an exploit to unlock it.
So she was thinking that she could buy another at a retail store, take then both apart using a heat gun, swap the back side of the phone(which has the visible serial number), and return the locked phone.
When returning phones, do they turn them on?

Not be able to call due to voluntary community service and church"? wtf.. how does that clash with not doing the right thing. I'm confused. it should be manditory. and also, if this person is a member of a church and does voluntary work why would your friend try and rip off 600 plus dollars (or whatever a iphone 6 goes for now).
and yes, they hook it up to a POS system and look to see if the IMEI number matches the back plate serial. also, the mount for the battery and the nanoboard is welded to the backplate. the battery comes out but not the processor. it's soldered in. the front plate with the screen is only flex cables to the digitizer and LED back panel.
so if you change out the back plate, you will change out the computer with it.. and then you have to register it to their POS, agree to the contracts and then once they go to refurbish it.. it will be shutdown remotely right away.

there are people who can set up a virtual OS on it but they have to wipe out the data. I'm curious if you can hook it up to a linux box if you can see the files on it as a plugged in HDD.
