TOR on “smart devices”

A coworker and I randomly started talking about TOR after we heard someone mention it.
I asked him what he uses (programs), but instead he pulls out his phone and says this is what I use, when I want to surf TOR or add some extra privacy.
In terms of programs he had Orbot & tor browser.

    My question is...
Isn’t it rather ill-advised to surf TOR on your smartphone or tablet?

Is TOR even that popular anymore?

if I remember right Orbot has had some major issues in the past

I wouldn't rely on tor on android/ios for the simple reason that these devices leak so much data normally that there's no way to be certain all traffic is being routed correctly

I tried Blue Stacks on a Windows computer as an emmulator for android apps to test using Tor...Orbot was erratic and everything over Android 5 was questionable. I wouldn't use my phone or tab for Tor.

This. There is so much telemetry going on between Apple/Google servers, TOR cannot be considered a safeguard.

In a perfect world you should use only a Linux PC and a tails loaded usb drive and SOCKS.

My personal "this is okay enough for my purposes" is windows and TOR browser. I would not use an andoroid device for even legitimate purposes.

If I was in a country with stricter internet or privacy laws, I would not feel safe without using Linux, tails, and SOCKS.

It ALL depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it.

Although Linix is the correct path.

I don't like Orbot at all and it used to sucks, in smartphones I just use PIA VPN and I'm ok with that. When I use TOR it's used along with VPN+TAILS.
