There's very little that I could imagine is causing high energy consumption.
Does it pop up right away or do you have to leave it for a while? -

Any page, sometimes right away, but I think it's typically when I type as much as I usually do in a thread or a PM so maybe it's got something to do with the volume of text? I'm not sure if that makes sense from a tech-savvy perspective.

It's a 2011 model that's held up very well, so I don't know about that. -

Use things as you normally would and see if you get that error message. If so, look at Activity Monitor and take notes of what is happening.
Does your CPU/RAM usage spike? Do you notice the fan speed increase?
It sounds like it could be a memory leak problem, but we need more information to be sure.
Did you update to High Sierra? Or at least, are you using the latest versions of Safari? -

I've upgraded and so far, it hasn't happened. You seem to have hit the target with that suggestion, but I won't know until I've watched it for a few days.
I've opened the activity monitor although I'm not sure how to interpret all this information. I do see that the CPU column for this site is fluctuating dramatically, however. First 1%, then 30%, now 10%. What should I make of this?

I'll be sure to try these if it persists. I'm not the best at that sort of maintenance, for the same reason I tend to hoard books and papers, so there's definitely room for improvement.

You need to use a utility to list the PID's sub-PIDs, then kill the thread that is eating up the memory. This allows the main executable to continue running without the need to reload the entire program.
