What do you think would happen if Google did crash and burn?
The dream is that the market would be open for smaller companies that actually compete to deliver better services to users, rather than one conglomerate controlling the market through government regulation.
It's wishful thinking though, really, for a lot of reasons. For one, Google is too entrenched in actual internet infrastructure; even if their services stopped being (obscenely) profitable many internet services would literally collapse if they were to shut down their datacentres... For another, even if most people were aware of the way their personal information was collected, used and/or abused they'd still cling to it because giving that up is easier than looking for or making alternatives.
Like I was ranting about the other day, there are kids alive now who have never not had a social media account, never not been connected - can you imagine what it'd be like for them to be forcefully disconnected? Even though we're similar now, they've never known anything else. -

Yeah I get the paranoia, I just don't buy it.
Ultimately the "user" controls their data. Idiots who have facebook accounts have only themselves to blame etc, put your whole fucking life online and then act surprised when your data is "mishandled"...give me a break. lolol -

I didn't "leave it somewhere", they took it from my thumb under pain of death/imprisonment depending on how hard I'd hypothetically fight back. -

Oversight of society needs to be done by competent regulators with pro-social interests rather than nebulous, antisocial, practically unaccountable, profit-motivated, multinational internet companies
No such thing...again you are pretty naive if you think any authority is free of corruption. Ever read animal farm?
Can't believe I have to spell this out but you are a Trump supporter so probably not too well endowed in the IQ department
More naive thinking...surveillance has been around a lot longer than Trump, the internet, me and you...and will continue on until the last 2 human's die. -

2018-07-06 at 3:30 AM UTCYeah, like people have said, I don't think the information I collect falls under GDPR protections, and I don't disclose it to any third parties which I think would make me exempt. The reason I don't know for sure is because I know it doesn't apply to me because the EU has no jurisdiction over me or my servers.
I do totally support GDPR on principle though -
