They should of spared Dresden but the British convinced the Americans to bomb it while they followed up with incidiary bombs to melt the humans hiding in their basements.
the city was never bombed during all of WWII until the Germans were surrendering. British destroyed a International city of rich culture and history for the world and not just Germans. WTF! Dresden almost certainly violated the Geneva Convention of the times.
