It is. It's the closest we can get to peering through the viel which seperates this reality from the next. Dreams can be a window into those worlds.

Its the supercomputer in your head that tries to keep your crazy ass alive even when you are suicidal/depressed or fucking with karma. If you believe in Karma (good things will happen if you do good) then the conscious is always trying to Maximize your rate of survival by always doing good because having good karma makes survival easer.
I believe the sub routines of my unconscious mind are much more intelligent than I will ever be. My greatest discoveries and AHA! moments are when I am in deep meditation and can see memories like files on a computer screen.

Why did I have such horrific nightmares when I was a child, before I could even watch horror movies? I had dreams I was in saw-like traps before saw even existed. I was only 4 years old.

I think the subconscious are just thoughts/mental processes that we are not typically conscious of, similar to how we are not typically conscious of physical processes like your heartbeat or the digestion of food.
By comparison what does that make consciousness? Is consciousness as special or important as people tend to believe? Does free will exist or not, and do questions like this even mean anything?
