Being in charge at work

So I recently got promoted. Keeping my job ambiguous here, but essentially I'm one of three heads of a brand new dept. Soon, I'll be left in charge and it is mildly terrifying. I've always had someone above me who I could look towards for guidance. Now I'm the one people will be looking too. I'm the most knowledgeable one.

I think I know what I'm doing, but it'll take a while for me to feel comfortable doing it. The next week is going to be a bit nerve-wracking. Obviously I'm capable to have gotten this far, so it'll turn out okay, but that doesn't stop the possibilities from running through my head.

Part of me wants to quit fabulously. Just fuck everything up. Move around employee scheduling. Delete important files. Change passwords. Add devastating spam enhancements. Call up corporate. Report violations. Anything to annoy my boss, though unfortunately he wouldn't be the one fixing any of this, so it'd just be a dick move to my coworkers I do like. And also it's not worth throwing away the references on my resume.

Plan is to work this for a few months and then use this experience as leverage to get a new gig of equal or higher status. For now it's pretty shitty tho.

Anybody else have any experience of being put in charge of something you barely know how to do?

    I couldn't do management.

I used to think that middle-managers were typically fags, and while I still do think so, working closely with them has taught me that getting on all fours isn't necessarily their choice... It's kind of like watching someone get raped day in, day out until they develop stockholm syndrome and just go through the motions

Thankfully I have more power than that.

The boss nigga is indeed a nigga, but he's barely there and just lets people do their thing. Which works fantastically. When he doesn't, shit gets annoying fast. He's done some rearranging of the workspace that just made no sense. You could tell he was deciding based on like, feng shui or some shit, and not what was actually conducive to work.

I'll be moving everything back this week lol.

Just act like you know what you're doing until you do. As a journeyman I am often put in charge of groups of apprentices. It's pretty easy.

Yeah this is pretty much my biggest complaint with working and any time I have a job I end up being forced to do all this extra stuff that has nothing to do with my original job.

I don't know what it is about my personality that gives people the impression I actually give a fuck. When I just drove forklift I was happy. They spent years 'grooming' Me to be Manager of this million dollar store and gave me newer duties and more money.

The only problem was I had no say in the duties I wanted to do so they told me I had to learn light construction, mechanics, accounting and bookkeeping.

Well I got bored of that very quickly and started doing lots of meth and the only thing that kept me sane back then was my chemistry hobby, it was my only escape from This world I didn't even want a part of.

I moved to crackshackville to learn to grow weed and got a job at a farm supply store to meet weed growers and sell grow lights and pesticides and shit and hope to meet an LSD Chemist or some weed growers who want to hire me to make weed oil.

Instead I had to run a store that sold pet food, farm feed, dog toys, fish, bird feeders, roundup, irrigation, seeds, fertilizer, roses and and chemicals.

I was just gonna use the chemicals as a front to order meth cooking supplies. The entire store had many back door shady dealings with growers and I had to deal with all these scammy people all day.

It was all working towards a life I didn't want. I would wake up next to a woman I hated but I can't leave because she's pregnant and she's friends with all my co workers and picks me up from work and brings me lunch. My life was so engrained within itself and world collided that I just stopped caring.

I ended up leaving it all with multiple suicide attempts, jail visits, mental hospital, hardcore drug addiction and a fucked up personal life.

I used to be normal. this all went on when I posted on Zoklet flasks and beakers, I was so busy living that life I never had time to play games or go on the internet.

I once lived without internet for almost a year and nobody around me cared/questioned reality or wanted anything different.

So it's going fabulously. All my worries settled themselves out, as is always the case. The biggest annoyance is dealing with upper management. I can't stand my boss and now I have to deal with him regularly.

Can't wait to put this on a resume. I know I can get paid more elsewhere for what I'm doing.

Heres the thing: the company has exist before you and will continue to exist after you.
Sooooo don't feel bad about quitting once you have used them for the experience but dont eff it up on purpose either. Ppl are generally faking that they know what to do.

I don't plan on staying more than a few months. I have a good reason to be leaving anyway.

I had to manage the front desk and hospitality staff eventually at my first career job. I had serious imposter syndrome since I had never managed before and had no formal training. Essentially I just tried to do as much of my own research and poking around online that I could and took things to my mentors when I felt like I was stuck on what the “right” thing to do was as a supervisor in whatever situation I was stuck on. I also just tried to be extra on top of everything the first couple weeks so that if a fire broke out I had to give my attention to my entire schedule wasn’t thrown off.

Not sure if that is helpful at all but eh...

Ok but a good solid year of management experience looks better on the resume, unless you’ve already been in the position for a while now, in which case just tell me to piss off.

I've already been in a managerial position for 4 or 5 months now. Would rather get a job where I make more money than have a year of this position on my resume. Looking for a job that pays better is a reasonable reason to find a new job anyway, especially considering I'll probably have to give up this position when I leave to China this year. They're gonna need someone new, but right at this moment I'm irreplaceable. Like if I did a no show and never came back they'd be fucked, because they'd need someone to go through the external training/certification that I did. They can't just promote someone, and I imagine hiring from outside is even more difficult. That's why they want a month's notice before I leave lol.

I don’t disagree that higher pay is a good goal/reason to switch.

I might end up leaving sooner than expected. Waiting to hear back from corporate on my pay. If it isn't high enough I'll probably just work till the one weekend I said I'd cover someone's shift.

Kinda want to just leave the country tho. Put in my 2 weeks. Buy a ticket. I have the money. I could easily do it. But then I can't travel like I planned.
