Calgary police Sgt. Gord Eirikson said the slur got at least one person killed.
“By calling that person a goof, he got stabbed to death,” Eirikson told a four-woman, eight-man Court of Queen’s Bench jury.
“There’s no other word that means as much (in the criminal milieu),” he said.
Eirikson was giving expert evidence in the trial of purported gang leader and murder suspect Nick Chan.
Chan, a member of the FOB gang, is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Sanjeev Mann, one of three people killed during the Jan. 1, 2009, massacre at the Bolsa restaurant.
Eirikson said based on information gathered by police investigators, Mann was associated with the FOB’s hated rivals, the FK gang.
Among the pieces of evidence was a “goof” list found at Chan’s residence.In a PowerPoint presentation outlining the relationship between the rival groups, Eirikson wrote that word alone showed Chan’s disdain for the FK.
“To my knowledge there is no other term which embodies the level of loathing and hatred represented by the word goof,” he said.
Eirikson gave jurors a lesson on the deadly rivalry between the FOB and FK, two gangs formed after a falling out among a group of friends.
Both Mann and Chan had evidence that linked each to their respective gangs and both wore body armour, a sign they feared being on the street.
“Mr. Mann was wearing body armour at the time of his murder,” he told Crown prosecutor Steve Johnston.
But Eirikson told Johnston he was not asked to provide an expert opinion on what Chan’s position in the gang was.
